In his first speech since taking office, Rui Costa said the following: “I am as of today President of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, to the exact extent of the Club Statutes. I take on this leadership role with the same pride, passion and commitment as I did when I first wore the shirt of Benfica.
I decided to make this speech on the pitch, where I lived, with our jersey, the happiest moments of my life. I know the responsibility that I took on, and what the Benfica supporters expect from me and from those in this position. I will do and give everything so that the Club becomes bigger and bigger.
These times are challenging, but they are times to unite for the most important thing: Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Our priorities are to prepare for the football and sports seasons, and we must do so with ambition. That will be my focus and my motto: Win!
I also want to convey a message of confidence and support to our employees, our commercial and financial partners, but, above all, to our Partners, and to our shareholders, as President of the SAD.
We will continue to honour, as before, our commitments. I will know how to listen to the messages from our supporters, putting the interests of the Club ahead of everything else. I will always be one of you. I want a strong, united Benfica and I will work daily to make that happen. Long live Benfica!”
Rui Costa started his playing career at Benfica in 1990 and made 164 appearances for the club. He also represented the Portuguese national team on 94 occasions.
