STARS ALIGN FOR CANCER DEADLINE DAY

Music legends Sir Rod Stewart and The Who are among the bigname supporters of Cancer Deadline Day, a brand-new fixture on the football calendar that is playing for the future of eight of the biggest cancer charities.

The consortium of charities – Breast Cancer Now, CLIC Sargent, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pancreatic Cancer UK, Prostate Cancer UK, The Ruth Strauss Foundation, Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Teenage Cancer Trust – will all receive a split of moneys raised from the campaign.

More than 40 football clubs from the Premier League, WSL, Scottish Premier League and English Football League have also signed up in support of the new campaign, with fans pledging money in a bid to help their side to the top of the giving table.

Sir Rod Stewart, who himself has suffered from both thyroid and prostate cancer, is amongst the celebrity fans to have already supported the campaign, saying: “Wouldn’t It be great If we could get Celtic to the top of the table?” Former England strikers Alan Shearer and Michael Owen, broadcast legend Jeff Stelling and Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter have also backed the campaign.

Transfer Deadline Day is one of the biggest days of the year for football fans and the British media, as clubs throughout the country spend millions of pounds on signing new players before the transfer window closes for several months. Conversely, Covid-19 has had a huge direct impact on vital fundraising for the charities supporting people living with cancer.

Tracey Pritchard, Director of Fundraising and Supporter Engagement at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We’re delighted to sign up for Cancer Deadline Day alongside so many great organisations, helping to raise crucial awareness and vital funds for Prostate Cancer UK and the wider cancer community.

“One man dies from prostate cancer every 45 minutes in the UK. Shockingly, that’s two men during every game of football. The impact of the coronavirus crisis has been devastating for so many people across business and in the charity sector. For Prostate Cancer UK, it has impacted our income hugely, and our life-saving research has been affected too. Sadly, prostate cancer hasn’t come to a standstill, and men have never needed support more than now to protect research and treatments.”

Luke Mallett, Director of Income and Engagement at CLIC Sargent, added: “We are excited to be part of Cancer Deadline Day. The pandemic is having a huge impact on the young people and families we support, but whatever this year holds, CLIC Sargent will continue to be there for young cancer patients and their families. “The pandemic has hit cancer charities like CLIC Sargent hard, it’s having a significant impact on our ability to raise money.”

The January transfer window is open now and runs until Transfer Deadline Day on 1st February 2021. For more Information, please contact: media@cancerdeadlineday.org
