Bloomsbury Football launches ‘No Backseats’ campaign to empower the next generation of girls in football

The charity has unveiled its new campaign ‘No Backseats’ to showcase that no girl or young woman is being left behind with Bloomsbury Football.

Building on the successful launch of the Bloomsbury Football’s Girls Football Strategy and their pledge to get 10,000 girls on the pitch by 2028, the football charity has launched ‘No Backseats’ to celebrate International Women’s Day. The campaign aims to empower young women and girls to take their rightful position on the pitch and ensure that no one is being left behind.

Bloomsbury Football’s ‘No Backseats’ campaign officially launched ahead of International Women’s Day on Monday 3rd March with a powerful video that showcases the stories of three girls supported by Bloomsbury Football; Aniera (11), Lola (13) and Alexia (16), who all embody the energy and confidence of what it means to be a girl in football. The three girls have all been playing football with Bloomsbury Football for the last few years, with the charity helping them to re-ignite their passion for the sport and enabling them to grow their confidence on and off the pitch.

Since Bloomsbury Football was founded in 2018, the charity has been on a mission to make football accessible to every young Londoner. ‘No Backseats’ is part of Bloomsbury Football’s long-term commitment to growing the women and girls’ game and fits within the wider Girls Strategy launched last year.

The charity currently engages 5,500 young people on the pitch in London each week, with 35% of these players being girls. All-year-round Bloomsbury Football help to bridge the existing gap and various participation barriers in women’s sport, with the charity making a 50/50 pledge to provide equal opportunities and get 10,000 girls playing football by 2028.

The inspiration for ‘No Backseats’ came from the charity’s International Women’s Day campaign in 2024, ‘A Seat at the Table’. This featured three female coaches in the Bloomsbury Football community, and shone a spotlight on the need for representation at every level of the game. ‘No Backseats’ builds on this, and uses the players in the Bloomsbury Football community as role models to other girls and young women in London.

Founder & CEO of Bloomsbury Football, Charlie Hyman commented: “With the help of our various partners, we have the opportunity to reach our ambitious goals to get more girls on the pitch and lead the way in breaking down participation barriers.

Our ‘No Backseats’ campaign truly aims to foster empowerment and show young girls that there’s a place for them in football, and to continue championing the young girls that are part of our Bloomsbury Football community.”

16-year-old Bloomsbury Football participant, Alexia added: “Bloomsbury Football has given me lots of opportunities to play football abroad, and with different age groups too, which has allowed me to develop my football abilities more. Their ‘No Backseats’ campaign inspires me to continue making an impact in the U18 Girls Academy squad and being a role model for future generations.”
