Barclays Women’s Super League December player, manager and goal of the month award winners announced

The winners of the Barclays Women’s Super League awards for December have now been confirmed.

Decided by a combination of the public and a panel of experts, December’s voting has yielded a hat-trick of successes for Arsenal with the Gunners emerging victorious in all three categories.

Firstly, Alessia Russo has been named as Player of the Month after an impressive December for the North London side.

Netting twice in a 4-0 win over Aston Villa to start the month – opening the scoring at the Emirates with a well-placed header before an additional strike in injury time – Russo also scored the winner against Liverpool prior to the winter break.

The forward saw off competition from Viviane Asseyi, Steph Catley, Bethany England, Sara Holmgaard and Dominique Janssen to take the award.

The club’s interim head coach Renee Slegers meanwhile secured her first Manager of the Month accolade of the season.

Leading Arsenal to third position in the Barclays WSL standings ahead of the turn of the year with wins against Aston Villa and Liverpool – where they scored five and conceded none – the Gunners are currently on a four-match winning streak ahead of the restart of the league.

Slegers saw off the challenge of Manchester United boss Marc Skinner and Spurs’ Robert Vilahamn to pick up the award for the first time.

Finally, Russo’s aforementioned late strike against Aston Villa was voted as Goal of the Month for December, beating efforts from Leah Galton, Sara Holmgaard, Mary Fowler, Jelena Cankovic, Anouk Denton, Wieke Kaptein and Marisa Olislagers to the accolade.
